Moto Hagio is a highly celebrated mangaka, considered a "founding mother" of modern shoujo manga and a prominent member of the Year 24 Group. Her professional debut was in 1969, at the age of 20, with her short story "Lulu to Mimi" in Nakayoshi. She subsequently produced a series of short stories for various magazines, published by Shogakukan. In 1971, Hagio released "Juichigatsu no Gimunajiumu" (The November Gymnasium), a short story which boldly explored the theme of love between two boys at a boarding school.
